Welcome to the Mark Murphy Blog! If you have any questions for Mark, or are looking for information regarding tour dates, music or anything Jazz, just leave your message!
Hi! Spoke to Mark on the phone a couple of weeks ago and he told me that he would be in my country, the Netherlands (Europe) sometime in September for a performance. Can you give me more details so that I can attend the concert and see him before or afterwards (as we mostly do!). Thanks!
Roy Borghouts Rotterdam / The Netherlands / Holland
Even though I'm definitely not Mark, I can answer part of the question about "I Know You From Somewhere." It was written by him after 9/11. Certainly is a beautiful and moving song.
Just got an LP copy of "This Could Be the Start of Something." Reinforces that Mark has been a consistently incredible vocalist throughout his entire career, from the late 1950s to the present time.
The latest heads up: Mark has made an appearance on a new CD by French pianist Guiliame de Chassy and bassist Daniel Yvinec called "Songs of the Last Century." Paul Motian is the drummer (he last worked with Mark on "Rah"). Mark appears on 4 cuts; "I'll Walk Alone", "The I'll Be Tired of You", "Taking a Chance on Love" and "I Wish You Love." The entire album was recorded in NYC but is difficult to find in the US in anything other that download form... a sign of things to come. And even then not all tracks are available. For the CD and all tracks, you'll have to go to amazon.fr and do your shopping in French. The album is pricey, but having it delivered by the slowest route helps. Nice album that is good for late-night listening. Worth having for sure. Happy hunting.
Note to webmeister Wayne: Thanks for the work you do. I'll have to get you the updated discography with three new entries.
Since Mark himself said to me, "tell all your friends," I'd like to mention that he has a definite gig (also confirmed with the club itself) at the Kitano in New York City. It's July 31-Aug. 1, two sets per night at 8:00 and 10:00. For Reservations & Inquiries call: 212-885-7119 or E-mail: Jazz@Kitano.com. Let's do as Mark requested in his recent blog post and support him by coming out to his gigs!
There is a blog regarding the 13th Jazz Journalists Association awards ceremony which took place in New York City this past Tuesday, 6/16/09. It's written by Arnold J. Smith. There is a wonderful comment posted about Mark Murphy. If anyone's interested, go to www.jazz.com, click on Jazz Blog at top left, and go down to "Comments" at the end of the blog. Enjoy!
Note to Webmeister Wayne: I've updated the discography to include song titles in albums as well added a few new entries. Where can I send the new file? I'm at steve@readingresource.org.
If you havent found it already check out Mark picking up his award by the JJA on youtube this link should get you there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXsLZ8kGdgU&feature=channel
Hi All, Was wondering if there was any news re the Double Dave dvd of Mark it looks great. Recently saw the Jackie Paris film Autumn Leaves Mark is interviewed on it (super hip as always)....
Glad you got to hear her. I caught her at a festival where Kurt Elling was playing, he invited her up to sing with him.
Michelle, who is quite shy, really didn't want to do it (she was in a pair of old jeans, in the audience, with no shoes on) but the locals who knew her forced her into it.
They just did a blues - trading fours, at the end Kurt Elling said smilingly: "She won!". And he was right about that. Props to Kurt AND Michelle.
WHERE ARE YOU PERFORMING THESE DAYS???? I SO MISS YOUR PERFORMANCES. I WILL ALWAYS CHERISH THE TIME I GAVE YOU A RIDE TO PATTI SUMMERS IN SEATTLE AND YOU SERANADING ME FROM THE BACK SEAT. I ABSOLUTLY LOVE YOUR MUSIC, ESPECIALLY LIVE.
CXEARL ....... Mark is at the Kitano in New York City on July 31st and August 1st. If you're in the area, maybe you may want to make reservations right away because it seems that many are doing it already.
Mark -- Would you consider "twittering" perhaps? Would love to get your quick on-the-move thoughts, insights, observations, whereabouts, etc.
('Course, in some ways, I guess that's what my iPod is for... loaded with MM MP3's... for my own on-the-move enjoyment of your music. Still, it'd be fun to follow you.)
I love Mr. Murphy and I wish he come more often to Los Angeles to perform. Any future dates I am not aware of in LA? He is the greatest Jazz singer of all time PERIOD.
Anonymous in LA ..... I agree. Mr. Murphy is THE BEST that ever came along in the history of this world. What he has done with vocal jazz is so vast and deep ..... it is beyond words! No other has come close to what he has given us! I bow to him and wish him the very best always!
Giving all NYC-area fans the heads up that it's almost time for Mark's Kitano gig, on Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1. Apparently the sets are at 8:00 and 10:00. Reservations are coming in fast, so make sure you call 212-885-7119 ASAP.
hope all goes well for the NY gigs in terms of a sell out and support for the man we ALL love.
Cha Cha, you will be representing Australia too - hope you don't mind - so please be extra loud for us and give Mark a big hug from all his Aussie family.
You'll be glad to know that apparently lots of folks will be coming to the Kitano to show their love and admiration for Mark.
I'll make sure to woop, holler and make a big commotion after each of Mark's wonderful songs, plus I'll give him two hugs--one from me and an extra-special one from you and all the members of his Aussie family. (I've heard him mention how much he loves visiting Australia.)
Hey Mark...I liked the KITANO; very nice venue. I think I'll come to your late sessions more often. They're better than the earlier ones, 'cause the crowd is more into it (and probably somewhat less inhibited).
I liked your new headgear, it's just like one of the covers I wore when I was in chemotherapy!! I was also happy to see Nancy once again, and if nothing goes wrong, I'll see you at the Lake.
Thank you Mr. Murphy for your performances last Friday and Saturday night at the KITANO in New York City! Once again you showed us how it ought to be done! Will forever listen to your music and will forever be in awe of your craft! All the best to you, Sir!
Hi Everybody. suggestion: I used to belong to MMAS as im sure a lot of the bloggers here were. Getting a copy of the MARKS TIMES through the post was something of an event I still read them over, occasionally reliving great MM gigs at the POTP in London or experiencing the thrill of MM gigs through members accounts of their trips to gigs, some of Berts (the editor) accounts even started with background events train journey down, hotel etc.Now the point...Lets face it MM gigs are getting rare, particularly if you dont live in NY, they are like gold dust so couldn't we have some reviews from some members of his gigs? I know the written word is unfashionable twitter, Facebook etc teach us to condense our feelings into brief sentences, coded words or superlatives like 'awesome' 'amazing....they tell us nothing unless you were there. This excellent site is a great way of sharing the music that we love with each other,we are after all a minoriy of a minority.....what do you think?
I had the privilege of attending both nights and all four sets of Mark's Kitano gig, but can only briefly report right now. The man remains the most amazing live performer--jazz or otherwise. Even though he's 77 years old, the quality of his voice, phrasing, scatting, and sense of drama in presentation of the songs is undiminished and unsurpassed. The ballads were sung sensitively and with passion and the uptempo numbers swung magnificantly. Every single set was sold out, and I can tell you without exaggeration that there was such a palpable feeling of love for the great legend it made experiencing his incredible artistry in such an intimate setting that much more powerful and moving.
If anyone is interested, Mr. Murphy's recent performance at the Kitano has been reviewed at www.jazz.com. Click on Jazz Blog at the top of the home page and scroll down to: "August 4, 2009 / Stolen Moments with Mark Murphy". A truly wonderful article describing the event! Enjoy!
What's most unbelievable about the Kitano videos, is that Mark's level of performance and vocal quality are still so extraordinary although he's 77 years old.
Was wondering if it is at all possible to play the song MM is singing on this site in its ENTIRETY instead of having it continuously loop to the beginning over and over again. Also, is it possible to have a few different songs play one after the other since there are so many that MM has recorded throughout his career? It would be great to have the ability to hear him sing different tunes as we navigate our way through - it would enhance the experience of coming to this site.
Did you go to the Home page first, or directly to the BlogSpace? When someone goes to the Home page they hear a repeating loop of the song, "Nightmoves." However, this blog page itself is silent. (Then, again, the problem could have something to do with whether you use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, or is maybe a computer glitch.) Nuff said...
Spent last night listening to Mark's recording with Till Bronner. That has to be the most romantic, torchy, moving recording I've ever heard. No one on the planet tells a story through a song the way Mark does.
I remember attending a vocal workshop here in Melbourne Australia with him and watching him teach some very good (and not so good) singers. He was amazing the way he spotted immediately what they needed to work on. I have SO many memories of great gigs and times with Mr M. When I have time I'll write about them.
I'm feeling a bit blue today cos I'm in Melbourne and he's not here. Have to log on to Youtube for a blast of Marky I think!
A couple things. First, there are four more MM tracks out there in a collection called "Rare Tracks Collection Vol. 1." They are "Come Back Again," "It’s Been a Long Time," "Hong Kong Blues," "A’ll Never Be a Rich Man." They are orchestrated (Metropole Orchestra?), sound as if they are from the 60s or early 70s, and are available nowhere else that I'm aware of. One place you'll find it is at:
Something worth noting is that this collection, so far, is only available as an mp3 download. Hopefully, a CD package will follow soon. BTW, do you realize that Mark's recording career began just after 78 RPM records were discontinued (1955) in the U.S. and is still going at a time when his stuff is only available by download?
Question: Does anyone know the order of performance of the Katoni videos on YouTube? I'd love to check them out in the order he performed them. A huge thanks to the person who captured the performance. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to convert a YouTube clip to DVD-R.
Note to Webmeister Wayne: Yet another update of the MM discography is on its way to you.
If you havent discovered it yet check out 'Spotify' there are rare tracks of Marks on there and virtually every one you can think of to listen to for free and its legal??? Apparently this is the way of things now you just have to endure an audio advert for something every 3rd song or so. It's like a sweet shop for music lovers but it does feel wrong but thats me showing my age perhaps? I think this is what they call....THE FUTURE.....
Just tried to go to Spotify but found out that it's not yet available to computer users in the USA, due to licensing restrictions. Darn those licensing restrictions--they hold up so many good things!
Dear Mark - I hope this note finds you well! I am a friend of Chantal Thompson who was a student of yours in the past (maybe two years ago) and she recorded several tunes -some of which were arranged and re-harmonized by guitarist Steve Blum - Chantal had mentioned to me that you had asked who had done the arrangements-and she mentioned to you that Steve was the one-- I was hoping that you might have had an interest in spreading the word about Steve -who has encountered some physical problems of late but can sit at the computer and arrange his ass off- The tune you asked about was "You Go to My Head"-- He is very good with Logic -and can write out lead sheets and fuller charts Maybe you can mention him to vocalists who are searching for the right chords-He usedtoplay behind Peggy Lee -and learned alot form Lou Levy -Peggy's Accompanist I too am a vocalist -Jane Blackstone who is trying to help Steve some -www.janeblacksone.com
Steve's email is blumusic13@gmail.com www.steveblummusic.com
Hi Mark Jane Blackstone wants to make you aware of the mistaken email on the previous message- if you can respond please write to blackstone.jane@gmail.com another email ended up there -completely a wrong unexpected "paste" after the closing "thanks" -- I HOPE YOU ARE HAVING A GREAT SUMMER
There are vocal workshops run by Mark on Youtube. Anyone who has ever attended one of his workshops will tell you it is well worth checking out. Mr Murphy is the best vocal coach I have ever seen in action, amazing.
While I'm here, webmaster Wayne - is there anything we can do about flipping these pages? You would have noticed we have to scroll down and click 'newest' to get here now. Probably - the answer is no, I guess. :-(
hope to see you in oct in s.f.remember me? i was a student of yours at centrum in the mid-eighties.It will be a birthday present to you to hear you perform again.I am still at it,singing in my Italian ristorante up here in Seattle.Feeling nostalgic when i listen to you.You still got it!
Listening to Mark's LP, "Living Room," which I'd never heard before. Not only is his voice amazing (as usual), but hearing him sing, "There'll Be Some Changes Made," makes me glad to be alive!
Not sure if anybody else already posted this, but Stephen Duffy on his BBC Radio Scotland show, The Jazz House, recently played a 20-minute concert of Michel Legrand songs, which Mark performed with the Frankfurt Big Band. It begins about 1/4 into the show.
Couldn't seem to properly paste the link to the audio of Mark's Michel Legrand big band concert. At any rate, guess you can go to the BBC Radio site and search for it. :(
I've seen Mark many times, what great energy and style . I was also a huge fan of the late Chris Connor and saw her more often due to living on the east coast. I wonder if Mark has any great memories of seeing Chris perform or the other fans? Chris many unpublished recordings/ masters for Atlantic were destroyed in a NJ ware house in 1969? Hope fully with her passing the Japanese cds will be released here.
I always enjoyed Chris Connor's singing myself. Her performance of "All About Ronnie," with the Kenton Orchestra, is one of my favorite recorded vocals. Furthermore, I had the privilege of seeing her sing live at a concert in a NYC park, a few years back. Wonderful artist...
Hey, did anybody manage to snag a recording off the web of Mark's material with the Frankfurt Big Band as aired on the BBC? It was only posted for a week and I heard about it too late to take advantage of it. Will trade for a copy.
Wish I'd realized myself that the Frankfurt Big Band performance would be only be up for a week. Got to hear it but didn't try to record it. It was the all-Legrand program we've heard about for a while--a bit unusual, but really beautiful. Guess we have to hope now that it will be released commercially at some point.
Remember me to the early '80's when Cathleen Chin & I represented you from S.F. for a year during period of "Bop For Kerouac." My brother did the LP art & we attended the recording session in Holywood (Sage & Sound). Also, Cat & I celebrated with you your Great American Music Hall jazz anniversary on your 50th year as famed jazz man of the world...How could it be that it was 27 years ago?! Inspired to communicate with you after just seeing brilliant docu on Anita O'Day entitled "Life of a Jazz Singer." You too deserve such a stirring honor. I left California after 34 years last year after my wife died (Susan Coppola). Now in Virginia. My cell is still the same: 310-962-0164. You are truly extraordinary, Mark. When I hear you I still melt from the exquisite voice and refreshing phrasing.....a man, a voice of brilliant talent.
greetings from Germany. Nice to see that so manny people are interested in this great music.
I would like to ask you for your help: Sometimes it is very hard for a non native speaker to understand everything of the lyrics Mark is singing. For example I would like to have the complete lyrics of "Why and how" (Midnight Mood) which is one of my favourites. Do you know a source for those words or is someone of you able to send me the text? I would be very grateful. Thanks and best regards.
The CD by French pianist Guiliame de Chassy and bassist Daniel Yvinec called "Songs of the Last Century." Available on iTunes. I found it by searching for 'I'll Walk Alone', then scrolling down to their album.
Hello Steve Cumming - are you up for a trade? I will take the time to transcribe those words for you (I have the cd) if you will help me get a copy of Very Early which is only available in Germany. Deal? Thanks for considering. Peace and blessings, Kate ksinger5@hotmail.com (mention Mark in the subject)
Aware of upcoming MM Celebration gig at Yoshi's,Oakland made me do a little diggin on net(instead of just listening to Mark repeatedly on "older" media). Thrilled to find fan site, see videos, comment here. Then to see that MM will be in SF on 25th well life's just so good ain't it?!
Tomorrow is the big nite at Yoshi's in Oakland.Kitty and Madeline had told me about it some time ago I had planned to be there Mark, but it just isn't going to work out for me. My thoughts will be with you, and I am so disappointed I will not be there. Love, Ronnie in P.S.
Unfortunately Mark will not be able to make it to his Celebration gig at Yoshi's tonight. He was back in the hospital (in New Jersey) this morning, and last I heard they hoped to get him back into the Assisted Care Facility this afternoon. Please join us in prayer that he heals quickly and is able to make his San Francisco gig this coming Sunday.
I'm so sorry to hear that Mark's gig at Yoshi's was cancelled. My husband has been seeing Mark for 40 years, and he introduced me to his genius 10 years ago when we met. Is there any new information about his gig a Florence Gould Theater? Also, does anyone know the nature of his illness? Thank you for any information regarding the Jazz Master of all time.
The SF Jazz promo had a clip from a DVD on Mark that I believe was done by doubledave.com and released in 2008. The facebook page on SF Jazz has the link.
Yes, to the question did he make it to the show. We were told he'd landed in SF at 3am. Incredible afternoon and feel so fortunate to have experienced it.
Hello all - yes, Mark made it to his SF Jazz Fest concert yesterday. He was amazing! The white haired (under crocheted tuk) white bearded gentleman sat on his stool and gently, but surely totally captivated the audience with the most heartfelt, emotional set anyone ever saw, anywhere! Sheer perfection. His second encore was done a'capella - Jane Powell's "It's Too Late Now." Had us all crying. I don't know how many more gigs he'll be able to do, so if you get a chance to see him DON'T MISS IT! I think his next concert is in NYC in November. Check it out.
I was there in san. fran on oct 25th.I came from seattle for the gig.I will never forget it.The audience was in his thrall the whole concert. It was a performance like I have never experienced before. He had us all hanging on his every chord. We all left with tears in our eyes.I feel privileged to have been there for the honesty of his emotional performance.
MARK....YOU'RE THE GREATEST....PERIOD!!!!!!I have worn the grooves right off your records.I listen to mostly jazz fusion, electronic, classic jazz...a great variety, being 57 years old! I was at woodstock, and have seen"everyone"in every genre since the late 60's!!! Always time for Mark Murphy!! stolen moments, red clay,...dam you are AMAZING!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SHEER,PURE PLEASURE OF YOUR VOICE,PHRASING,HUMOR,...YOUR IMMENSE TALENT!!!! THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!
Does anyone have information on Mark Murphy's health? I saw him a year ago at Yoshi's, and he looked about like the pictures in his latest CD. We had to suffer through a Vegas type lounge singer before MM came on, but he sang the way he always does. Then I saw him this October, and he had changed dramatically - unsteady physically, snow white beard, much heavier but same great voice, with mostly scat singing with a new guitarist, but clearly physically in rough shape. The gig at Yoshi's was a benefit for Alzheimer's, and I wonder if that has anything to do with him.
He is to voice what Bill Evans was to piano. Thinking about the jazz scene without him hurts my heart.
I saw Mark in performance here in Chicago back in May. While he was assisted a bit as he walked on stage, his performance that night was solid (and too brief). While in the lobby and waiting for a cab, I overheard Mark as he spoke on his cell phone. I'm no doc and I don't know if anything ails him, but Mark sounded bright, sharp, and assertive. If he doesn't have a spring in his step just now, he certainly retains Spring in his heart and mind. (Have fun at Iridium, Mark. Wish I could fly out to NYC this week.)
According to the site for Mark Murphy's manager, the Pizza Express gig is still on. For more info go to: http://www.mmmusicagency.com/itinerary.htm#MURPHY.
Couldn't seem to get the entire url for Mark's section of Maurice Montoya's site to paste properly. You can instead go to http://www.mmmusicagency.com, click on the Itinerary tab and check out his schedule from there.
Really really disappointed that Mark won't be appearing at Pizza Express Dean St in London (scheduled 8-10 January 2010). Really sad - haven't seen him since Brecon Jazz Festival August 2008. Any UK dates confirmed? Please please come back soon Mark - we're missing you lots.
Re the Iridium gig: Mark was, not unexpectedly, amazing. His performances seem to get even better as time goes on--how many singers at any age can say that! Plus he looked great as he sat on his stool and showed everybody that he is the one in charge, not just vocally but in how he decides what direction the music will take, according to his inspiration at the moment. Furthermore, there was a good crowd on Thursday and on Friday the club was totally sold out for both sets.
I wanted to thank those of you who are keeping the flag flying here - Cha Cha, Kate, Steve, webmeister, friendofjazz and everybody else - you're doing a wonderful job, thankyou.
The London shows for January 2010look unlikely. The Pizza Express site has Soweto Kinch booked for the dates that Mark's agency has listed. I assume that this must be down to Mark's health concerns, so could somebody please pass on some love to the big man from all of us in London.
Those amazing Kitano clips on Youtube, and the glowing, knowing reviews that you lovely people are writing about Mark's recent shows, are proof that even now we continue to discover amazing new dimensions to the man. Of course, this just makes it even more upsetting that we won't see him over here soon, and get to show him our support in person. Please, friendofjazz (whoever you may be!)et al, continue to capture as much of MM on video as you can. Not as good as the real thing, but hey, it'll do until the real thing comes along (another good name for a song, huh?)
Soon,
Nick (bignickcannon@hotmail.com)
PS: Has anyone got a recording of that Legrand broadcast? Sounds unmissable. Steve?

wishing everybody at the wonderful mark murphy website a very happy christmas and a good new year I pray for a better new year for mark, whose voice I don't remember not hearing for all my live xxx
Greetings, All........We'd like to see Mark Murphy get a lot of Christmas cards this year, as he needs all the support he can get. Please give this address to everyone connected to him...friends, many relatives and lots of fans. Thanks so much. The Family
Mark H. Murphy, Room 101B Lillian Booth Actor's Home 155-175 West Hudson St. Englewood, NJ 07631
Kate My friend JaneC introduced me to the wonderful voice that is Mark some years ago now, and like many others I feel in love. Please convey our warmest wishes to him for Christmas and the New Year. We both live in England and would appreciate news regarding Mark. Love and best wishes LynnE x
I just got turned on to Mark Murphy a few years ago at his Jazz Bakery gig. I've heard the word "mesmerizing" used frequently to describe Mark's style - and I must agree.
I'm sorry to hear Mark is having some health issues. Recently I wrote to him and was surprised that Mark took the time to return my message. That says a lot about his character and it is an act I'll always appreciate. His music brings such joy and depth to the world of jazz and I wish him all the best in 2010. Happy New Year Mark!
I can attest that Mark is one of the nicest cats you'll ever meet. It is definitely this open and friendly quality which makes him such a great artist, who keeps getting better with the passing of the years.
Since it's almost time for the NEA Awards ceremony, I'm reminded that our man, Mark, should be receiving such recognition the next time around. Those of us who live in the USA can go to the site and nominate him for inclusion in the next group of honorees. I believe this is still the url:
P.S. Let's make sure this time we all let the NEA know Mark deserves to be named a "Jazz Master," so my opinion that he "should be" becomes a definite "will be!"
Where in the world can I find an old Mark Murphy album, called Mark 2 [roman numeral] from 1972 or 73. It's when I first became hip to Mark. I had it on a 33. Please if you can help me, I'd be eternally grateful Thank You
Why don't you try Amazon.com or Dusty Groove on the net? These two sites often have good used copies of Mark's stuff on vinyl. However, I don't believe I ever saw Mark II released on CD. At any rate, hope this helps.
I'm so glad to have found this site. I used to go and see Mark Murphy at Baker's Keyboard Lounge in Detroit, Michigan, one of the hottest jazz spots in Detroit. I met Mark once. He is an utterly amazing performer that can never be forgotten once you've seen him live. Decades later and he's still one of my favorites.
Hi Vicki! I m desperately trying to find out what gigs Mark may be doing this winter (2010) - no matter what city. I hope that he is well and that the lack of tour dates on the website does not imply ill health. I am so sorry to have missed the San Fran event - I didn't know about it, but could easily have been there. Many thanks, from Mark's biggest fan, James Armstrong. Please let us know about when we can see him! (also - I am interested in booking him). Thanks!
Having been a old fan of Mark, I enjoy singing and listening to his tunes. Now I dictated a blues named "Blues, You're The Mother Of Sin" from the album "That's How I Love The Blues!". But I'm not sure the words are accurate. It would help a lot if someone seek and correct the errors, please. My dictation follows.
********
Blues, You’re The Mother Of Sin Recorded by Mark Murphy
Blues, you're a lingering shadow Blues, you get under my skin You're a vicious refrain, you're a pleasure and pain Blues, you're the mother of sin
Yeah, what born in a dive and wind on misery Then, you put down some jive and crest of society You can weaken the strong, make the right just the wrong Blues, you're the mother of sin
When I'm feeling happy, glad, merry, mad You came along with your troubling song Making me lonely and sad that's can be Won't you ever get wise, try some happier guys Blues, blues
Blues, you're a lingering shadow Blues, can a man never win You have made people grieve and said sold out of my leaving Blues, you're the mother of sin
Hi All, does anyone know if the documentary on Mark has been released yet or is likely to be? I know there were a few problems with the release date originally but the snippets looked great, any ideas?. Also does anyone know how Mark is these days? be great to hear he is well. Thanks Jeremy
In relation to the documentary, there are problems obtaining music rights, which is why it hasn't been released. I can also assure you that Mark's still da man--handsome, witty and marvelous to speak with. Plus he retains the ability to sing things off-the-cuff better than most of us could with lots of practice!
I am guitarist Vinny Valentino's manager and agent; he and Mark Murphy will be playing two sets on Friday April 9 at Trumpets Jazz Club:
Mark Murphy – Vocals; Vinny Valentino – Guitar Friday April 9, 2010 Two Shows – 7:30 & 9:30 pm Trumpet’s Jazz Club, 6 Depot Square, Montclair, NJ 07042 (973) 744-2600 www.trumpetsjazz.com
In addition, Mark will be inducted into Trumpet's exclusive Hall of Fame that night; it should be a memorable evening, one I hope Mark's fans will attend.
Rich, thanks for the great news! I'll definitely try to make it there. Joyce, is Mark's birthday this month or April 14th? I'd like to send him a card. Same address as previously posted?
Just confirming something mentioned in a few other posts: that today is definitely Mark's birthday, and I believe, his 78th. I can't think of a better way to celebrate than by listening to your favorite Murphy recordings!
What a good idea! I just put on my fav..."The Dream - Mark Murphy with the Metropole Orchestra" - I think you can get it from... hmmm... Redwood Cascade, or something like that. Love to Mark. Love to you all!
Happy Birthday Mark! I wish you all the very best! I'm booked to NY to attend the gig on April 9th at Trumpets. Sounds like a great evening and a fitting tribute to an incredible artist.
Hello! I would like to find lyrics to the famous "on the red claey" but I failed to do it through internet? Can you maybe help me? Thanks a lot and best regards)

On his birthday, I watched vintage Murphy on DVD: his two appearances with Bill Mays on Ad Lib in 1981 (now available as part of the DVD, "Murphy's Mood") and something rare and no longer available, Mark's late 1950s appearance on Stars of Jazz. (So young and handsome, and already such an amazing and compelling performer.)
Hi! I'm a young (still studying) jazz singer living in Italy. I'd like to know if MM is going to plan a jazz workshop somewhere in Italy/Europe this year. Or if he's teaching jazz singing somewhere not to far from Italy!
Hi Folks - Advance ticket sales for Mark's Apr 9 gig at Trumpets jazz club are on sale now. Go to www.trumpetsjazz.com for details.
If you have any questions about the gig, please email me at Richard.Bonomo@ebbrands.com
Oh yes, permit me to introduce myself again: I am guitarist Vinny Valentino's manager and agent. He will be doing the duo with Mark on Apr 9. Some of you might have also seen Vinny play with Mark at Kitano's in July 2009 or at the San Fran jazz festival in Oct 2009.
Many of you might not be able to make the Apr 9 gig but Mark, Vinny and I would like to thank you for all your support, enthusiasm, and most importantly, good taste.:)
Tell your friends and hope to see you at the gig. Thanks, RB
I have an interesting "thread" to add to this blog: Okay, fellow posters, which of Mark's many LP or CD covers is your favorite? One of mine is "Let Yourself Go," where Mark in a suit is reclining on top of a piano, his arms outstretched and beckoning, while two slinky women are alongside him. So kitschy and typical 50s! When I presented the CD reissue to Mark for his autograph, he proceeded to show it to others around him, because even he was amused by the picture.
OMG! I just found you Mr. Murphy and I'm so glad I did. One word when I hear you FREEDOM…...Please do some classes for vocalist even if it’s an audio link on your website
I wish southern California were not so far from your April 9th gig in New Jersey. Being exposed to some of your music recently brought back some great Mark Murphy memories. I was a disc jockey in Cincinnati in the late 50s and early 60s. We were attending a house party in Mt Adams sometime in late 1961. Our daughter (born in May of '61)was with us and pinned down in one of those strap contraptions popular at the time taking a nap in somebody's bedroom. My wife went in to check on her and there you were on the bed singing lullabies. Little Darling or something like that. Congratulations on such a great career.
I attended the gig at Trumpets last night. In short, it was everything I could have hoped for - and more! Mark and Vinny Valentino sounded wonderful together. There were many emotional moments and some great laughs in the room as Mark moved from his classic tunes into some new material he and Vinny just recorded. Yes, a new MM album is coming! Mark never ceases to amaze me with the way he can summon a seemingly endless amount of musical material to provide the perfect mood or accent.
The gig was well attended and the number of well known and respected musical talents in the room spoke volumes about Mark's ongoing respect and credibility in the the jazz world.
Like many, I have been worried about Mark's health and wondered how he would present this gig. Well folks, I'm happy to say that despite some challenges commensurate with his age, Mark is sounding strong as ever. He still has it, and I look forward to hearing more from him in the future.
Great big HUGE thanks to whoever posted the review about Trumpet's April 9th. Oh, how we wished we could have been there! I saw the two of them at the San Francisco Jazz Fest last fall, so I know how magical they are together. Thanks again, Kate
Hi folks, I am in the process of procuring more gigs for Mark and Vinny Valentino in the coming months: at Kitanos and the Metropolitan Room in NY and the Gerald Veasley's Jazz Base in PA.
Something not previously mentioned about Mark's Trumpets gig was the fact that he looked really great: white knitted skullcap, white beard neatly trimmed, brightly-colored silk shirt, black dress pants, shiny black patent-leather shoes, and his now-trademark many rings with large gemstones. The man still has style!
Hi Rich - NY/PA/DC/Cleveland - Columbus, we would love to see the show. I've been hooked on Mark since I discovered Night Moves in the late 80's. Thank you also for the blog! Best wishes all - Denise
We are still working on getting NYC dates for June 2010. The Kitano was booked for their duo series, unfortunately, but we are hopeful for The Metropolitan room and also the Jazz Base in PA and Blues Alley in DC. You guys will be the first to know when dates are solid. Thanks.
Oh God, Mark is definitely still gigging! Heard him live with Vinnie at Trumpets recently, and he was amazing. Looked great, sounded great, and even trotted out some stuff he hadn't performed for a while, like his special lyrics for the song "My Favorite Things."
Hi Folks - We have procured another date for Mark and Vinny Valentino:
Place: The Metropolitan Room Location: 34 West 22nd street (between 5th and 6th avenues), New York, NY 10010 Date: Sunday June 13, 2 sets, 7pm and 9:30pm Website: www.metropolitanroom.com Cover: $30 per set
The club had been reluctant to give MM and VV two sets on one night; I assured them that Mark's name and fans will make the evening memorable for all. I hope we can count on you spreading the word about the gig in concert with our promo efforts here.
Much thanks in advance for your enthusiasm and support.
Did you tell the folks at the Metropolitan Room how Mark packed Trumpets, for both sets? Also, that other equally-renowned singers were in attendance? (You have to be a pretty special performer if both Sheila Jordan and Irene Kral show up for your gig!)
FYI--There seems to be a glitch on this blogspace. I left one comment and it was repeated here numerous times, so I had to delete the extraneous ones. Also, there are problems navigating the second page that shows later comments. Can this be fixed?
Kate: Sorry you won't be able to get to Mark's next gig at the Metropolitan Room, especially because "The Room" is a 5-minute walk from my apartment!! I've missed Mark's last two NYC-and- vicinity gigs, but I won't miss this one, and I'll try to get some other descendants of James and Althea to join me.
Was at a recent brunch gig where Mark sat in with the band for three songs--with no music nor rehearsal. The man killed! He did all the lyrics from memory and was vocally stronger than ever. Some of the things he sang were literally breathtaking! I later mentioned to him that most of us can barely function so early in the day, so I was amazed that his performance was as perfect as at a regular, nighttime gig.
A bit of a correction to one of my earlier posts: it was indeed Sheila Jordan and Jackie Cain who attended Mark's Trumpets gig (but NOT Irene Kral). Sorry guys!
Hello All - Just wanted to let you know to check out the Metropolitan Room's website (www.metropolitanroom.com) and see the gig info posted on their calendar section. The photo of Mark and Vinny was from their Trumpets gig last month. Please spread the word about the shows; I really think getting Mark out there on stage has much to do with his return to good health.
I've got reservations and will be headed out from SoCal for the Metropolitan Room gig. Looking forward to hearing another great night with Mark and Vinny!
For our "down under" friend...the next Mark Murphy gig:
Sunday June 13, 2 sets, 7pm and 9:30pm The Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd street (between 5th and 6th avenues) New York, NY 10010. www.metropolitanroom.com
Hi Mark: Remember the Dock in Tiburon and Bach Dynamite in Half Moon Bay -- N. California. You came down to our Chris Craft at Tiburon, and my wife Suzanne sat in on drums for a bit. We live in area of Phoenix AZ now. Tell me if you're coming this way-- we'll show up! I recall your voice is bigger than Mnt. Tamalpious! Buzz May2010
Mark Murphy,God gave you something that perhaps, not only you, but I so graciously thank HIM for Definately you're the only one in the world who got that extra little sprinkle of blessings. Your voice is truly that of an angel. And I don't necessarily mean what you can do with it,[which is out of this world] but the tone of voice that you have. I'm messmerized
The next Mark Murphy gig with guitarist Vinny Valentino:
Sunday June 13, 2 sets, 7pm and 9:30pm The Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd street (between 5th and 6th avenues) New York, NY 10010. www.metropolitanroom.com
Cover: $30 per set.
The team that runs Mark's website are having difficulty updating his gigs page. Feel free to email me at richard.bonomo@ebbrands.com for upcoming gigs. I will also post dates on this blog site.
Mark - Much love from the "kids" and we are thinking of you constantly. Glad to hear the rest is doing you good. How's that biog. doing? Plus time for drawing and/or painting? We miss the regular "doses" of unique vocalisation of songs. "Nobody does it better"....
The Chilterns are fine but would be better with you here. Love you lots,
The next Mark Murphy gig with guitarist Vinny Valentino:
Sunday June 13, 2 sets, 7pm and 9:30pm The Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd street (between 5th and 6th avenues) New York, NY 10010. www.metropolitanroom.com
Cover: $30 per set.
Please spread the word. Hope to see you there and much thanks, Rich B.
Want to pose a question to the other Murphy fans here: are there recordings OTHER than Rah, Stolen Moments, Bop for Kerouac and Love Is What Stays that are favorites of yours? (For example, in my case I love The Dream, Sings Mostly Dorothy Fields & Cy Coleman, and Midnight Mood.) Just curious...
Was just listening to Mark's first album, "Meet Mark Murphy." Substantially different approach to the music, than later in his career. But the powerful vocal chops were already there, plus he sounded quite charming singing the ballads in a more "traditional" style.
Cha Cha: I'll be back in NYC in a few months - this time I'd love to meet up with someone who loves Jazz as much as I do. Are you on FB? My name on Facebook is Vicki Bonet if you want to contact me. I want to see your diamonte jazz ear rings up close! :-)
Someone else was asking about other recordings of Mark's - there are so many - check Amazon.com.
Cha Cha I'll be back in NYC in Oct/November. I plan to hit every jazz club in town again. I'd love to meet you in person next time, so I can see your Jazz ear rings up close!
Maybe we could catch up for coffee - there's a great cafe opposite the Vilage Vanguard that has Melbourne- type coffe.
I sent you a message on FB. Would be great if we could finally meet. I'm aware of Amazon.com, as well as Ebay, which are the places where I got many of Mark's rarer CDs and LPs. Have most of his recordings, with the exception of the Nat Cole tributes and Mark Murphy Sings. Each time I see him at a gig, he autographs a different one for me. (He always glances at the liner notes and comments on the musicians who accompanied him.)

Hi!
Spoke to Mark on the phone a couple of weeks ago and he told me that he would be in my country, the Netherlands (Europe) sometime in September for a performance. Can you give me more details so that I can attend the concert and see him before or afterwards (as we mostly do!).
Thanks!

Question for Mark: Did you write the song "I Know You From Somewhere"? It's a great song. Is there a music or a chart one can obtain?
Even though I'm definitely not Mark, I can answer part of the question about "I Know You From Somewhere." It was written by him after 9/11. Certainly is a beautiful and moving song.
Cha Cha
Just got an LP copy of "This Could Be the Start of Something." Reinforces that Mark has been a consistently incredible vocalist throughout his entire career, from the late 1950s to the present time.
Cha Cha
For Reservations & Inquiries call: 212-885-7119 or
E-mail: Jazz@Kitano.com.
I echo your comments. We love Mr Mark Murphy. He is extraordinary.
Anyone interested in amazing jazz vocalists should check out an Australian jazz vocalist that Kurt Elling is raving about.
Michelle Nicole: incredible range and amazing musician. Mark loves her and so do many others, including me. I have all her recordings. Check her out:
michellenicoole.com
Sorry that should read:
www.michellenicolle.com
Checked out Michelle Nicolle... Superb, she's definately got IT !Thanks for the tip
WHERE IN THE HELL ARE YOU??
For Leaf on 8-10-08: For more Cole Porter music, try Mr. Murphy's CD "The Latin Porter", a very interesting, and lively performance.
We'll be there in spirit.
People asking for Mark Murphy on Twitter - not likely, sorry - we have a hard time getting info on his gigs in advance people! :-)
Hi Vicki,
You'll be glad to know that apparently lots of folks will be coming to the Kitano to show their love and admiration for Mark.
I'll make sure to woop, holler and make a big commotion after each of Mark's wonderful songs, plus I'll give him two hugs--one from me and an extra-special one from you and all the members of his Aussie family. (I've heard him mention how much he loves visiting Australia.)
Cha Cha
Mark Murphy, the greatest jazz singer ever. When will you be in Los Angeles again. The two girls from Detroit, always see you at the Jazz Bakery
Unbelievable first night at the Kitano. Mark was in wonderful voice, the room was packed and the audience absolutely loved him.
Vicki--I made sure to give him that extra hug from you and his loyal Aussie fans.
Neil
Hi Jeremy,
I had the privilege of attending both nights and all four sets of Mark's Kitano gig, but can only briefly report right now.
Cha Cha
If anyone is interested, Mr. Murphy's recent performance at the Kitano has been reviewed at www.jazz.com. Click on Jazz Blog at the top of the home page and scroll down to: "August 4, 2009 / Stolen Moments with Mark Murphy". A truly wonderful article describing the event! Enjoy!
Wonderful videos of Mark performing have been uploaded. If anyone wants to see them, go to www.youtube.com/friendofjazz.
Greatest thanks for the videos at Kitano! It was like watching Mark live.
What's most unbelievable about the Kitano videos, is that Mark's level of performance and vocal quality are still so extraordinary although he's 77 years old.
Hey Jeremy (I presume you live in England?), did you ever check out this place on You Tube? Lots of Mark Murphy! Check it out:
http://www.youtube.com/friendofjazz
Some of the nicest videos I've seen of Mark Murphy so far.
Just checked it out, great to see good quality footage of Mark who is on good form... isn't technology wonderful!
Dear Webmaster,
Was wondering if it is at all possible to play the song MM is singing on this site in its ENTIRETY instead of having it continuously loop to the beginning over and over again. Also, is it possible to have a few different songs play one after the other since there are so many that MM has recorded throughout his career? It would be great to have the ability to hear him sing different tunes as we navigate our way through - it would enhance the experience of coming to this site.
Many thanks for your time and attention.
WHAT MUSIC?? I don't hear anything! Can someone tell me why others hear it and I dont??
Enjie,
Did you go to the Home page first, or directly to the BlogSpace? When someone goes to the Home page they hear a repeating loop of the song, "Nightmoves." However, this blog page itself is silent. (Then, again, the problem could have something to do with whether you use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, or is maybe a computer glitch.) Nuff said...
Thanks...I went to the home page and heard the loop...no problems.
One place you'll find it is at:
http://www.emusic.com/album/Various-Artists-Rare-Tracks-Collection-vol-1-MP3-Download/11445884.html
Hi Steve!
Here is the order in which MM sang his songs at the Kitano gig:
The First Night (7/31/09):
Just In Time, On Green Dolphin Street, Slowly, Night And Day, Photograph, Stolen Moments, Too Late Now.
The Second Night (8/1/09):
All Blues, When I Fall In Love/My One And Only Love, Before We Say Goodbye, Night And Day, Senor Blues, Photograph, Stolen Moments.
If you have any other questions, feel free to email me through my YouTube channel. And a huge "you're welcome" to you for watching my videos!
Last but not least, thank you for always updating us on MM's discography ..... valuable and much cherished information. Great job!
Take care,
friendofjazz
If you havent discovered it yet check out 'Spotify' there are rare tracks of Marks on there and virtually every one you can think of to listen to for free and its legal??? Apparently this is the way of things now you just have to endure an audio advert for something every 3rd song or so. It's like a sweet shop for music lovers but it does feel wrong but thats me showing my age perhaps? I think this is what they call....THE FUTURE.....
Actually listening to tracks with advertisements in between kinda sounds like radio--without the annoying djs.
Just tried to go to Spotify but found out that it's not yet available to computer users in the USA, due to licensing restrictions. Darn those licensing restrictions--they hold up so many good things!
Hello there !
Just a few words to say Mr Mark Murphy : please come again in Paris.
We miss you so much.
I wish you love too.
Dear Mark -
I hope this note finds you well! I am a friend of Chantal Thompson who was a student of yours in the past (maybe two years ago) and she recorded several tunes -some of which were arranged and re-harmonized by guitarist Steve Blum - Chantal had mentioned to me that you had asked who had done the arrangements-and she mentioned to you that Steve was the one-- I was hoping that you might have had an interest in spreading the word about Steve -who has encountered some physical problems of late but can sit at the computer and arrange his ass off-
The tune you asked about was "You Go to My Head"-- He is very good with Logic -and can write out lead sheets and fuller charts
Maybe you can mention him to vocalists who are searching for the right chords-He usedtoplay behind Peggy Lee -and learned alot form Lou Levy -Peggy's Accompanist
I too am a vocalist -Jane Blackstone who is trying to help Steve some -www.janeblacksone.com
Steve's email is blumusic13@gmail.com
www.steveblummusic.com
THANKS SO VERY MUCH - hwatman@gmail.com
Hi Mark
Jane Blackstone wants to make you aware of the mistaken email on the previous message- if you can respond
please write to blackstone.jane@gmail.com
another email ended up there -completely a wrong unexpected "paste" after the closing "thanks"
-- I HOPE YOU ARE HAVING A GREAT SUMMER
Is there any workshop of Mr. Murphy anywhere in the world?
There are vocal workshops run by Mark on Youtube. Anyone who has ever attended one of his workshops will tell you it is well worth checking out. Mr Murphy is the best vocal coach I have ever seen in action, amazing.
While I'm here, webmaster Wayne - is there anything we can do about flipping these pages? You would have noticed we have to scroll down and click 'newest' to get here now. Probably - the answer is no, I guess. :-(
is mark playing in nyc any time in oct/nov 09?
Just purchased my tix for Mr. Murphy's Oct. 25 gig at San Francisco and I AM PUMPED! I cannot wait!
Scott,
Mark was unbelievable about a month ago at Kitano, so I know you're in for a treat!
hope to see you in oct in s.f.remember me? i was a student of yours at centrum in the mid-eighties.It will be a birthday present to you to hear you perform again.I am still at it,singing in my Italian ristorante up here in Seattle.Feeling nostalgic when i listen to you.You still got it!
It begins about 1/4 into the show.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00mpp13/The_Jazz_House_16_09_2009/
Couldn't seem to properly paste the link to the audio of Mark's Michel Legrand big band concert. At any rate, guess you can go to the BBC Radio site and search for it. :(
I've seen Mark many times, what great energy and style .
I was also a huge fan of the late Chris Connor and saw her more often due to living on the east coast. I wonder if Mark has any great memories of seeing Chris perform or the other fans?
Chris many unpublished recordings/ masters
for Atlantic were destroyed in a NJ
ware house in 1969?
Hope fully with her passing the
Japanese cds will be released here.
Was able to get some of Mark's music played on the PA system of a local internet/tea cafe. Hope this will bring him even more fans!
hello,
I discover Mark MURPHY and i love his voice ; i look for lyrics of "Red Clay" if you can help me ;

Hey, did anybody manage to snag a recording off the web of Mark's material with the Frankfurt Big Band as aired on the BBC? It was only posted for a week and I heard about it too late to take advantage of it. Will trade for a copy.
Hi Steve,
Wish I'd realized myself that the Frankfurt Big Band performance would be only be up for a week. Got to hear it but didn't try to record it. It was the all-Legrand program we've heard about for a while--a bit unusual, but really beautiful. Guess we have to hope now that it will be released commercially at some point.

Hi Mark -
Remember me to the early '80's when Cathleen Chin & I represented you from S.F. for a year during period of "Bop For Kerouac." My brother did the LP art & we attended the recording session in Holywood (Sage & Sound).

Hallo Mark, hallo everybody,
greetings from Germany.
MArk's tracks are great as usual.
Hello Steve Cumming - are you up for a trade? I will take the time to transcribe those words for you (I have the cd) if you will help me get a copy of Very Early which is only available in Germany.
Deal?

Aware of upcoming MM Celebration gig at Yoshi's,Oakland made me do a little diggin on net(instead of just listening to Mark repeatedly on "older" media). Thrilled to find fan site, see videos, comment here. Then to see that MM will be in SF on 25th well life's just so good ain't it?!
Tomorrow is the big nite at Yoshi's in Oakland.Kitty and Madeline had told me about it some time ago I had planned to be there Mark, but it just isn't going to work out for me. My thoughts will be with you, and I am so disappointed I will not be there. Love,
Ronnie in P.S.
Any ideas on where I can get a copy of the DVD?
(BTW-Hope some of you were at the show today.)
Did Mark make it to his concert in San Francisco yesterday?
To my knowledge the DVD documentary on Mark has not been released yet.
We would love to see you at a gig out here in Dubai!!! Any chance of that happening? I would even help set it up if it helped!

I hope that he recovers very soon
and visits the UK
I love everything he does, may he continue forever
Giving everybody the heads up that Mark will be at the Iridium Jazz Club in NYC on Thursday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 27, sets at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m.
Hello,
Just wondering if Mark will be
appearing in Chicago anytime in 2010.
Don't want to miss this time,
thanks much
Does anyone have information on Mark Murphy's health?
Is Mark appearing at Pizza Express 8/1/10? Cant see it listed!
Any news re the recent Iridium gigs? No posts yet, How was it??...
Thanks cha cha, brilliant news!
Mark - whatever, we wish you much love and take good care of yourself. There will never be another you...good name for a song eh? We'll meet again....
Love from all the family,
"Marjorie" (alias you know who) we love you very much.
Hello all,
I wanted to thank those of you who are keeping the flag flying here - Cha Cha, Kate, Steve, webmeister, friendofjazz and everybody else - you're doing a wonderful job, thankyou.
Soon,
Nick

PS: Has anyone got a recording of that Legrand broadcast? Sounds unmissable. Steve?

If anyone is interested, a new Mark Murphy audio track from a 1976 performance at Kent State University can be found on the following YouTube channel:

Long live the King, Mark Mirphy!
Kate - can we get an update on how Mark is doing? I am a longtime fan, and my heart is aching right now.
Kate
My friend JaneC introduced me to the wonderful voice that is Mark some years ago now, and like many others I feel in love.
Hi Andy,
I can attest that Mark is one of the nicest cats you'll ever meet.
I believe this is still the url:
http://www.nea.gov/national/jazz/index.html#
Bandit,
There's quite a bit of MM's videos on YouTube. If you would like to see his most recent performances, go to www.youtube.com/friendofjazz. Enjoy!
Thanks!
I'm don;t know if Mark has any gigs lined up in the near future. He has been resting due to ill health and you can write to him as Kate suggests at:

Ooh our first piece of Spam. Strongly suggest everyone ignores this posting!
Hi, evryone!
********
Blues, You’re The Mother Of Sin
Recorded by Mark Murphy
Blues, you're a lingering shadow
Blues, you get under my skin
You're a vicious refrain, you're a pleasure and pain
Blues, you're the mother of sin
Yeah, what born in a dive and wind on misery
Then, you put down some jive and crest of society
You can weaken the strong, make the right just the wrong
Blues, you're the mother of sin
When I'm feeling happy, glad, merry, mad
You came along with your troubling song
Making me lonely and sad that's can be
Won't you ever get wise, try some happier guys
Blues, blues
Blues, you're a lingering shadow
Blues, can a man never win
You have made people grieve and said sold out of my leaving
Blues, you're the mother of sin
Blues, you're the mother of sin
Please come to Boston.....
Does anyone have any current news of Mark's good friend, Cindy Bitterman?
I spoke to Cindy very recently and can attest that she's just fine and as wonderful a person as ever.

Hi All, does anyone know if the documentary on Mark has been released yet or is likely to be? I know there were a few problems with the release date originally but the snippets looked great, any ideas?. Also does anyone know how Mark is these days? be great to hear he is well.
Thanks
Jeremy
In relation to the documentary, there are problems obtaining music rights, which is why it hasn't been released. I can also assure you that Mark's still da man--handsome, witty and marvelous to speak with. Plus he retains the ability to sing things off-the-cuff better than most of us could with lots of practice!
Great to hear, many thanks for the post.
I am guitarist Vinny Valentino's manager and agent; he and Mark Murphy will be playing two sets on Friday April 9 at Trumpets Jazz Club:
Mark Murphy – Vocals; Vinny Valentino – Guitar
Friday April 9, 2010
Two Shows – 7:30 & 9:30 pm
Trumpet’s Jazz Club, 6 Depot Square, Montclair, NJ 07042 (973) 744-2600
www.trumpetsjazz.com
In addition, Mark will be inducted into Trumpet's exclusive Hall of Fame that night; it should be a memorable evening, one I hope Mark's fans will attend.
great to hear that Mark is working
I'd love to be there
I think that he has a birthday on 14th
Have a happy one
Rich, thanks for the great news! I'll definitely try to make it there. Joyce, is Mark's birthday this month or April 14th? I'd like to send him a card. Same address as previously posted?
This isn't Joyce, but I can tell you that Mark's birthday is on March 14--just a few days before St. Pat's Day!
I love the dream also Laura and so many stars on the same cd, I got it from I Tunes]
Hello!
I would like to find lyrics to the famous "on the red claey" but I failed to do it through internet? Can you maybe help me?

On his birthday, I watched vintage Murphy on DVD: his two appearances with Bill Mays on Ad Lib in 1981 (now available as part of the DVD, "Murphy's Mood") and something rare and no longer available, Mark's late 1950s appearance on Stars of Jazz. (So young and handsome, and already such an amazing and compelling performer.)
Hi When is Mark coming to Australia next??
Hi! I'm a young (still studying) jazz singer living in Italy. I'd like to know if MM is going to plan a jazz workshop somewhere in Italy/Europe this year. Or if he's teaching jazz singing somewhere not to far from Italy!
Thank you very much!

Would love, love, love to see lyrics on the website.... Any chance of that happening?
I wish southern California were not so far from your April 9th gig in New Jersey. Being exposed to some of your music recently brought back some great Mark Murphy memories. I was a disc jockey in Cincinnati in the late 50s and early 60s. We were attending a house party in Mt Adams sometime in late 1961. Our daughter (born in May of '61)was with us and pinned down in one of those strap contraptions popular at the time taking a nap in somebody's bedroom. My wife went in to check on her and there you were on the bed singing lullabies. Little Darling or something like that. Congratulations on such a great career.
Steve - I will pass along your story to Mark; such a lasting and fond memory all these years hence.
Wish us luck tonight at Trumpets.
Thanks, Rich
Great news about the new album and the gig! wishi could have been there. Thanks for posting.
I will post the details when they come available.
Thanks, Rich
Something not previously mentioned about Mark's Trumpets gig was the fact that he looked really great: white knitted skullcap, white beard neatly trimmed, brightly-colored silk shirt, black dress pants, shiny black patent-leather shoes, and his now-trademark many rings with large gemstones. The man still has style!
when you coming to DC!
Oh yes, and we will also try to get Mark and Vinny into the Blues Alley in DC.
I'll keep you posted as details are nailed down.
Rich B
Hi Rich - NY/PA/DC/Cleveland - Columbus, we would love to see the show. I've been hooked on Mark since I discovered Night Moves in the late 80's. Thank you also for the blog! Best wishes all - Denise
I'm in Southern California - let me know when you will be out here. I've always wanted to see you live!
Hi I was wondering if there was any more information on gigs by Mark coming up in 2010. Thanks so much.
We are still working on getting NYC dates for June 2010. The Kitano was booked for their duo series, unfortunately, but we are hopeful for The Metropolitan room and also the Jazz Base in PA and Blues Alley in DC. You guys will be the first to know when dates are solid. Thanks.
Rich B
Does anyone know if Mark is still gigging or has he retired due to health issues? Rumors are swirlling around---
Mark is still gigging; perhaps not as often as we would like (working on increasing that frequency), but he still has his live chops.
More to come.
Place: The Metropolitan Room
Location: 34 West 22nd street (between 5th and 6th avenues), New York, NY 10010
Date: Sunday June 13, 2 sets, 7pm and 9:30pm
Website: www.metropolitanroom.com
Cover: $30 per set
The club had been reluctant to give MM and VV two sets on one night; I assured them that Mark's name and fans will make the evening memorable for all. I hope we can count on you spreading the word about the gig in concert with our promo efforts here.
Much thanks in advance for your enthusiasm and support.
Rich B
Mark called me on the phone a couple days ago to announce his doctors have given him a clean bill of health and he is officially WELL!
He said part of his healing has come from all the cards and letters you sent, and he wonders if you would send him some more...?
His address is:
MARK MURPHY
The Lillian Both Actors Home
155 West Hudson Ave.
Englewood, N.J. 07631
And thank you so very, very much for coming out to his gigs. I live in Palm Springs, CA so cannot attend, but Mark says you all have been fabulous!
I know you were blessed by his music in return - he's a national treasure, isn't he.
xox, Kate
Rich,
Did you tell the folks at the Metropolitan Room how Mark packed Trumpets, for both sets?
Neil
Much thanks, Rich B
I've got reservations and will be headed out from SoCal for the Metropolitan Room gig. Looking forward to hearing another great night with Mark and Vinny!
I am wanting to travel from Australia to see a gig. Can someone please tell me where Mark is playing?
Thank you!

Where are you performing next?
Hi Mark: Remember the Dock in Tiburon and Bach Dynamite in Half Moon Bay -- N. California. You came down to our Chris Craft at Tiburon, and my wife Suzanne sat in on drums for a bit. We live in area of Phoenix AZ now. Tell me if you're coming this way-- we'll show up! I recall your voice is bigger than Mnt. Tamalpious! Buzz May2010
How do we find out where Mark Murphy is appearing?
Mark Murphy,God gave you something that perhaps, not only you, but I so graciously thank HIM for Definately you're the only one in the world who got that extra little sprinkle of blessings. Your voice is truly that of an angel. And I don't necessarily mean what you can do with it,[which is out of this world] but the tone of voice that you have. I'm messmerized

I've heard many of Mark's fans are intending to wear knit caps like Mark's to his Metropolitan Room gig. Is that so??
Oh, that is WAY cool!
Do it!
xox, Kate
Mark will be at Zinc Bar, NYC, June 16, 2010!
Hello all - Mark will not be at Zinc Bar June 16; the info and ads you might see are mistakes.
His next gig remains the Metropolitan room on June 13.
Thank you, Rich B
Richard.Bonomo@ebbrands.com
Mark - Much love from the "kids" and we are thinking of you constantly. Glad to hear the rest is doing you good. How's that biog. doing? Plus time for drawing and/or painting? We miss the regular "doses" of unique vocalisation of songs. "Nobody does it better"....
The Chilterns are fine but would be better with you here.
Love you lots,

Love your voice, Mark Murphy, and have wanted to see you in concert. Do you have any upcoming gigs in or near Pittsburgh, PA?
Want to pose a question to the other Murphy fans here: are there recordings OTHER than Rah, Stolen Moments, Bop for Kerouac and Love Is What Stays that are favorites of yours? (For example, in my case I love The Dream, Sings Mostly Dorothy Fields & Cy Coleman, and Midnight Mood.) Just curious...
Hi Everyone
How was the gig on June 13th? any clips for you tube?-
I was there for the first set (on the 13th, at the Metropolitan Room), and it was very nice, especially his unexpected "Danny Boy."
Vicki,
I sent you a message on FB.
