Welcome to the Mark Murphy Blog! If you have any questions for Mark, or are looking for information regarding tour dates, music or anything Jazz, just leave your message!
I have the double CD Mark Murphy sings Nat King Cole and more.I love all of it,especially the haunting 'roundabout', which he sings with Sheila Jordan, and 'I keep going back to Joes', which he also sings on a CD by Gill Manley. Delighted to hear that Mark has recovered.
If you haven't already, you should check out "One for Junior," the joint CD recorded by Mark and Sheila. It includes "Roundabout," as well as duets and songs sung individually.
Hi Mark. This is Mark Richards from Detroit checking to see where you will be performing next. We live in Las Vegas now. Please contact me at discusproductions@cox.net. I would love to talk with you again. It has been a long time. Hope you are doing well.
Just met and Saw Mark perform for the first time. He was so nice and open when I introduced myself to him. So commanding and amazing while singing. I was blown away. I have listened to him for so long and to finally see him and shake his hand.... I was shaking with excitment for hours. (of course it was him on stage with Nancy King and Karrin Allyson so.....) Anyway he informed me the documentary would be out soon! Long live the King!
Mark just sat in at a small jazz fest in Portland OR. A swinging But not for me. 3 singers along with a great rhythm section made for one hell of a show. Just being that close to the man inspired me to step up my singing chops and woodshed more.
That's Mark for you. Even just sitting in spontaneously, he can blow people away. The man is so filled with music, I think it now just comes forth from him naturally!
To the other Anon who asked about other Mark albums to listen to, I'll give one. I'm a big fan of Song For The Geese. It's somewhat hard to find, but has some absolutely killer tracks. You Go To My Head, I Remember, Sugar, and Baltimore Oriole are particular favourites.
Right now I'm listening to "Another Vision" one of my all time favorites, but very hard to find. It was recorded by Max Bolleman, Studio 44, Monster, Holland, for Fever Music, Belgium.
You gotta love those Dutch! My very most favorite album hands down is "The Dream" with the Metropole Orchestra. I think you can get it here - Redwood Music (or something like that) out of upstate New York.
I was able to get Another Vision as a download from iTunes. As for The Dream, it turns up in the "Used" section of Amazon.com quite often. I've gotten a couple of copies in great condition, from vendors there.
Always gets me when I hear Mark's acapella version of Never Never Land on Another Vision. So powerful and lovely. I think my favorite tracks on The Dream are So Many Stars, Hopeless and Stairway to Paradise. Which tracks on those albums do you enjoy the most?
I love the same tracks you love on The Dream, and also "I See Your Face Before Me." Actually that whole cd is totally awesome! It used to tickle Mark that my former husband and I used to make love to Another Vision. The order of songs was better for that on the unmixed tape Mark sent us in advance, than it is on the cd. Ah, well, no husband, no boy friend now, anyway. (smile)
This a bit like telling everyone where one of your favorite fishing holes is. "Another Vision" and other hard to find MM recordings can be located at www.gemm.com Happy hunting!
LET IT BE KNOWN: I've tried to Post using my username and passwaord, but EVERY time, they say my password is incorrect, or I didn't get it quite right when I copied those twisted letter-sequences, or something else. It doesn't matter how many times I try, I eventually have to give up and post "anonymously."
Curious which more unusual songs recorded by Mark are favorites of his other fans. In my own case, I love his version of the song, "She's Gone," which appeared on his "Bridging a Gap" LP. (It was originally from the "Friends and Love" suite by Chuck Mangione.) I also love the first version of "Come and Get Me." This one had rather eerie lyrics, in which Mark expressed his desire to be with a lover who had just died! (They were completely re-written and a second version included on "Bridging a Gap.")
Just want to encourage all of Mark's fans to vote for our man in the DownBeat Readers Poll. I don't believe you have to be a subscriber to do so. Just go to http://downbeat.com and click on the link to the ballot. As a vocal innovator who's still growing as an artist and blowing people away at his performances, he most certainly deserves this.
Anyone please help me with lyrics for Mark's version of Naima! I can't understand all the words since i'm not english-speaking. Please PM me in http://www.youtube.com/user/relhby
This is for Kate Murphy, in regards to Mark. How is Mark? And when will we have the pleasure of purchasing a new album. Love Mark, seen him many times at the Jazz Bakery in L.A.
In the UK, Gill Manly has a cd which is certainly worth getting, called 'with a song in my heart'.on it, she sings with Mark, his 'I keep going back to Joes' joyce
Greetings from Espana. I have a radio interview with Mark Murphy from February 1990 that I found in my library on cassette and I will be posting it on my blog just as soon I transfer it to a podcast.
I would like to know if Mark Murphy ever met Eddie Cochran in the fifties perhaps in Los Ageles when they were both working there. Eddie was moving musically in the same direction as Mark and it seems likely that he may have met Eddie. I am doing research for radio programs and itb would be great to get some advice.
Hello all mark's music lovers. I believe i have all Mark's cds, lps and 45 singles. The only cd which missing, is "Guido Di Leone - Hearing A Rhapsody" and especially the track "like someone in love". Looking on ebay or other sites for about a year, seems that it is impossible to find the cd. If someone here, wants to sell or share that cd (or that track), please contact me at jazz.best@yahoo.com Hugs to Mark and All.

This article by Jim Brown, written in Spring 2010 I believe, is the most recent update on Mark I've seen. It also has a link to one of his Kitano performances.
How do you contact Mark for vocal lessons? I am an experienced singer who would simply like to take it to another level by working and learning from the best.
Mark is currently in Montreal, Canada, for a two-night gig on Friday, November 5 and Saturday, November 6. His pianist is Misha Piatigorsky, whose playing many of you have enjoyed on the promo videos from DoubleDave. Here's the pertinent information:
"Celebrate Mark Murphy! the 2nd Annual Salute to the Eternal Influence of the Perennial Hipster. From Kerouac to Bebop, great a American Standards to the music of Brazil, four very unique artists survey Mark's legacy with stories and songs. Laurie Antonioli, Madeline Eastman, Kellye Gray &Kenny Washington. Monday, November 15, 8 p.m. at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA.
Hi Mark, David James from Australia. Many years ago I interviewed you in New York and mentioned a project of jazz written to Shakespeare (I have a PhD in Shakespeare). You sounded intrigued with the dramatic and musical possibilities (finest words ever written). So here is the music: http://www.myspace.com/musicspeare Here is the web site: http://musicspeare. My email is dja02739@bigpond.net.au. Be interested to know what you think.
Any word on how the gig in Montreal went last week? I would love to have been there to hear Mark doing his thing with Misha's group. I'm glad to hear Mark is out on the road working again.
I spoke with someone who was at the Montreal gig. They told me the club was packed for all sets and Mark was his usual amazing self, dazzling everybody with his vocal improvisations and commanding the stage as powerfully as ever. The audience responded to this with standing ovations.
As I am an aging jazz singer has- been, Mark is my fave jazz vocalist of all time. But since I saw him late last year -- Jazz Standard, Blue Note, Vanguard? -- in NYC, I was VERY concerned about his health. He was on a cane and looked very frail, barely able to stand. I know of his habit. Is he OK? I hope so!
I spent a lot of time with Mark a few weeks ago when I was in NYC. Mark is fine, walking around the city unaided, catching the subway, shopping for books, doing all the things that a sprightly octogenarian jazz artist might get up to. He has no 'habit' other than singing jazz. He will be celebrating his 80th birthday next year.
He performed in Canada less than two weeks ago to full houses and an appreciative audience. You have your facts wrong, John Smith.
Mark, when will you be in NYC again? I love your music, your style, and voice. I have never seen you live, but would love to. What is your upcoming schedule during the holiday season? Vince Vaughn
Mark/Kate, I sent a message earlier via "anonymous" ... just want you to know how much I love Mark and his spirit and what he has given me over the years ... it is incredible and will carry on forever. My mother just passed away and we played one of his tunes at the funeral ... so unbelievably moving ... and I read a George Carlin piece that was also very moving ... where are you guys? Where are you performing next? Get you ass out there and let me know where, I will be there! (hope this connection works) ... Vince Vaughn
Just saw Mark last night at a Jazz hang in New York City. He's looking wonderful. Tall and handsome as always! And a long time friend of his from Canada just spent the day with him too. People like Kurt Elling who recently used the word "frail" to describe Mark should basically shut up because they don't know what they're talking about. Hey Kurt, concentrate on your own thing 'cause Mark will always run circles around you baby!
Message from "Marjorie" and family - Mark knows who we are - love yah and wish we could be at your nexdt gig, wherever it is. The greatest. Only one MM - no mistakin' who it is when you listen.
Hi Mark, Hey when oh when are you coming back to England ??!! ...or even anywhere in Europe?..we'll travel!! I was at your last gig at Ronnie Scotts and we had a great..albeit very inebriated.. chat afterwards..yes I was that drunken cab driver! Til we see you again..lots of love
Last year someone put an address out there suggesting we send Mark some Christmas cards. Does anyone know if he's still at the same address so we can send them again this year? Thanks!
Love the website - and the song 'Bridges.' Any plans to come to Detroit area? Oakland Community College at Orchard Ridge campus often showcases awesome musicians; we saw Terry Kallier there. Wishing you continuing health, success and peace for 2011 and beyond!
Hello all, Just read that article and it has cheered up this dreary February afternoon no end! Great to hear Mark sounding so positive and forward-looking. It sounds like he still needs our support, even if only to get things like the DVD and book (A book! Can't wait!)rolling. I'm so pleased to see talk of potential dates in London, as I was beginning to think that may not happen again. Just fantastic to hear some good news. Welcome back, Mark. N.
Read the article. Kudos to the publisher for bringing us this important information! So he was misdiagnosed, huh? This is one of the best pieces of news in my entire life! Mark Murphy has always taught me through his singing, and his voice has healed me when I needed healing. I am so happy to know that Mark will continue to show us what it's all about, that in the end, everything always works out. Thank you Lord for giving us this extremely talented human being. Mark, may you be blessed with continued good health, and may you travel soon so all of us around the world can once again experience the comfort of a Mark Murphy performance!
New book by Will Friedwall just released titled: A Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers (Pantheon books). Mark Murphy's career and essence so perfectly described. A true "must read"!
It has been forever since I posted on this blog, but I have some good stuff to share. First, an LA Times article on Mark looks great and can be found here (copy and paste):
The second item is a heads-up to keep an eye out for a new MM album. The only question is if a label will pick it up. Go to this link (you might have to copy and paste):
Does anyone know if Mark Murphy will be in the WNY/Toronto area anytime soon. I haven't heard a word about any gigs. He's my all-time fav, just love his instrument! There'll never be another Mark!!! xoxoxo
I copied that link to the LA Times, but when I got to the site, I couldn't seem to find the article you mentioned. (Could this be due to the fact that I did this two days after your post?)
Absolutely wonderful interview with Mark, to promote his upcoming gigs in Florida on February 13 and 14. The url to the site where it's been archived is: http://wgcu.org/audioplayer/8894.aspx.
A second Murphy interview and listening session with yet another radio host tonight at 10:00 EST. Here's the url for the station's site, where you can listen to this via the stream: http://www.wusf.usf.edu/music/channel/jazz.
Heard the church concert went very well. Mark is also performing tonight at a venue in the Sarasota area. Both sets are sold out and there is a lot of names on the wait list in case anyone cancels their reservations!!!
To the Japanese people on this tragic day, I hope I can get over there before too long to sing for you and hopefully help to heal you and make you feel better. To all you good people asking as to where and when I will be performing next, I will let you know as soon as I have set dates. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the kind words and for the support you've given me throughout my career. Please know that I am greatly appreciative of your kindness. Mark Murphy
How can I find a copy of the 1972 Muse recording "Bridging a Gap" on CD? I have the lp, but really want the music on my ipod and computer. Please help. Steve, heavener@comcast.net
Yes,big hearty welcomes, indeed Jean-Pierre! I'm sure he has told you he will be singing at my daughter's wedding in Santa Barbara, CA the last weekend in June. LIFE IS GOOD!
Due to a glitch, some people may not have been able to see the recent post giving info on Mark's June 8 gig in NYC and June 10 gig in Rochester. Please note that you can also get complete details at www.jazzsaints.blogspot.com.
Hi there, I thought I'd let you know - I'm clearing out some albums and selling Mark's 'This Must Be Earth' album. Just thought I'd let you all know on here, as I know its one people are interested in finding. For some strange reason I listed it as 'This Must Be It'. And now I can't change it, how annoying. Anyway - it's here
Hallo from Berlin, Germany. I never posted anything here but I read this blog from the very beginning since I´m a great fan of Mark Murphy since the early 80´s. And thanks to this blog here I found out about Mark´s new CD and two weeks ago I received it. Great production! In the mid 90´s I met Mark two times here in Berlin. I think it was in 1995 when Mark stays only one night in Berlin for a short stop on his way to Copenhagen. And in March 1997 he gave a concert with the Berlin based radio big band “RIAS Big Band”. Mark said it is O.K.to film at the rehearsal so I put my little videocam and taped one hour of the rehearsal in the radio rehearsal studio. Since I´m not such a technical buff, I always was a little feaful to learn these YouTube things, etc. But now I did it!!! I think you´ll enjoy this nearly one hour video in four parts on YouTube. On that rehearsal Mark didn´t used a microphone, so the band sounds a little bit loud and Mark´s voice a little bit soft. But I think it´s very interesting to see how Mark rehearsed with the band. I hope you´ll like it. So, here are the links. Part 1: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaALgaGe07Y Part 2: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrGEjd2kwkk Part 3: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXx9iTIAsRY Part 4: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqbL9P4k_i4
Very best wishes from Berlin, Germany. Chris Muermann
Chris, that was some amazing stuff. Really enjoyed watching Mark and the band working to "put the pieces together". Everything must have sounded wonderful when it was performed at the actual gig. I also thought it cool seeing Mark sometimes dancing in his chair while he sang, as though he was feeling the music with his whole being. Thanks so much for uploading these videos to You Tube.
Cha Cha, thanks for the nice words. Although it was 14 years ago, that I saw this rehearsal, I sill remember every second of it. By the way, I also like the great photos on Mark´s new CD. Best wishes, Chris
Great news! Mark is scheduled to appear at the Zinc Bar in New York City on June 8, 2011 at 9:00PM. Location: 82 West 3rd Street (btw Thompson & Sullivan) in Greenwich Village. Mark will also be performing on June 10, 2011 at the Rochester Jazz Festival in Rochester, NY, at 5:30PM and 7:15PM. Location: Harro East Ballroom, 155 North Chestnut Street.
i just produced two very successful jazz concerts for Mark in Feb/2011. This was his career achievement award concert sponsored by the prestigious ''Jazz Foundation Of Amer.'' Mark was superb. I did his warm up vocally with my big band. The project produced both a wonderful DVD-video and a CD. These are avail. thru me at:

Hello, my name is Corina. I´m a Jazz singer, live in New York and was wondering if anybody knows if Mr Murphy gives any workshops, seminars or private lessons in town ??? I would be very interested in joining them if possible. Thanks a lot in advance for your help and attention, Kind regards, Corina.
Hi, and it's so wonderful to read about wonderful Mark via his devoted (and brilliant!) fans. I miss seeing him live. I've been blessed to have been able to see him in Seattle many times over decades and also in NYC at Birdland and Fat Tuesdays over the years. I mean, is there a better live jazz singer out there? No disrespect meant to any of the many talented folks, but Mark is MARK, after all. That voice just cuts into my soul like the most beautiful summer breeze. I'm so happy to be his fan and know he's out there, still making music, even if not in the clubs as much. What a gift his voice, style, charisma, and range are for so many of us! All of you Mark fans, have a wonderful day! Sheila in Seattle
ZINC BAR, NYC Wednesday, June 8, one set only, 9:30 pm 82 West 3rd Street (btw Thompson & Sullivan) Greenwich Village New York, NY Tickets: tel. 212-477-ZINC (9462) www.zincbar.com
Anyone make it to the Zinc Bar gig last night? How was it? I'm on the West Coast or I'd have been there for sure. I'm hoping to make it back there for the Birdland date.
The Zinc Bar gig was amazing. The place was packed, Mark's voice sounded better than ever and he gave the ultimate performance, blending artistry, wit, drama and excitement. Plus he looked so handsome in his shiny gold shirt, black blazer and white pants. Furthermore, Misha, Danton and Chris gave Mark strong and sensitive support on piano, bass and drums, respectively.
Thanks ChaCha! Actually, I found a short YouTube clip of the gig last night. Mark was closing on "Great City" and was in fine form. It sounded like there was a very large audience. It's only 1 minute, but well worth a listen.
I'm really working on making July at Birdland. Hope to see you there!
@Andy, the place was so filled with friends and fans that you couldn't see towards the entrance. I almost forgot to mention that the last two songs were performed with the addition of a string quartet, which added another wonderful dimension to an already amazing performance.
Mark Murphy did it again! This time at the Rochester (New York) International Jazz Festival on Friday, 6/10/11. The venue was a beautiful ballroom with great acoustics! Both sets were packed! His band was killin'! Misha Piatigorsky on piano, Danton Boller on bass and Chris Wabich on drums! Mark sang Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" with a real bad groove ... man IT WAS BAD! The solos from the band had someone in the audience cryin': "Sick, sick, sick" over and over again. Any of you in driving distance to a Mark Murphy gig, get in your cars and travel baby! At 79, he continues to show us where it's at! Long live the MAESTRO!!!!!
To declare the obvious with an air of discovery: Of Mark's many masterpieces, "Blood Count" remains, to these ears, as close to the Platonic ideal of vocal jazz interpretation as any ever offered.
And now a question: Does a MM at Kent State LP and/or CD exist?
With the deepest respect for and gratitude to Mark,
Okay, fellow Murphy fans, a gentle reminder about that Birdland gig on Sunday, July 24, set times at 9 and 11 p.m. I know I'm definitely going. Who else here is ready to experience an evening of incredible jazz vocal artistry?
Mark did not disappoint at his Birdland gig. Still the greatest jazz vocalist in the business, his singing and powerful overall performance resulted in the loudest, most enthusiastic cheers and applause I have heard in any jazz club for a long time. Once again, among the fans gathered in the room were scores of other singers eager to learn by example from the master. I and those with me are still overwhelmed by the beautiful experience.
Alerting all Murphy fans in the NYC area that our man has another gig here later this month. It's at the Kitano, on Friday and Saturday, August 26 and 27, set times 8 and 10. For more information go to the club's website at http://kitano.com/522/Bar_Lounge. Those of us who attended Mark's Birdland gig can attest what an exciting performer this vocal jazz legend still is (as though you all needed convincing!) Make your reservations ASAP, because the last time he played the Kitano, all the sets sold out quickly.
I just realized that, technically, Mark had not "played" the Kitano. Yet, since he does approach jazz performance as a great instrumentalist would, then I guess in his case the term would actually be appropriate!
Mark,Mark.Mark, the most beautiful voice in the world. You and Sarah V
aughn, past, present, and future. Speaking of Sarah Vaughn, love the song you wrote as a tribute to her on the Dream album. Mark, how about coming to Detroit one last time,at Bakers. I haven'nt been there since I saw you there back in the late 70's. It's still there. I since moved to L.A., and saw you every time you were at the Jazz Bakery. My sister and I, you'd recognize us we were in your face each time you were there. Mark what's the Oriental guy's name who was there that night. You said to us that if we think that you can sing, then we should hear this guy. Please, who is he? [I think he was Oriental] We will follow him,as we've followed you. I'm back in Detroit tha'ts why I want you to come to Baker's again. Hey Baker's/Jazz Bakery. Think about it, ther's alot of jazz lovers here in the Motor City. Love,Love,Love you
@Leila Flemming from Mark: Re the Oriental guy--"I believe he has a jazz club in LA, but not sure where. Say hello to all the Detroit gang who were so interested in my Kerouac stuff. (I think the name of one of them was Tom Gallaso.)"
OK, Mark, if you’re going to go as “far west” as Detroit, then come back to Chicago, eh? ;-) I saw you at the Columbia College event here in Chicago a couple years back. Meeting you half-way, I drove to Ann Arbor to catch you a few years earlier. And-- gladly meeting you more than half-way -- I made a couple trips to NYC to catch you at Birdland. (At the first of those, you introduced your wonderful “I Know Your from Somewhere.”) … I’ll always regret not having quite the $$ to swing back East to see you and Rebecca Parris together. (I hope a recording of that performance washes onto the shore one day.)
(I plan to be in NYC in early/mid November. Maybe a reprise at Kitano? Birdland? Smalls? ... I can hope and dream… Meanwhile: My vinyl, CDs, and MP3s. Thankfully.)
Hi all. I've just stumbled across mentions of MM playing in Istanbul and Germany recently. I regularly scour the web(on here, Google Alerts, Mark's Facebook, etc) for any mention of him visiting this side of the pond, but this was the first I'd heard about this tour. Were there other dates? Where was this publicised? Is there anywhere online that gives reliable info about his antics? Sorry if this post sounds tetchy, but I'm a HUGE fan and I'm Jonesing for a hit of Murphy. Anybody know anything?
This is turning into a busy month for Mark. He has yet another gig coming up on October 30 and 31, at the Festival de Jazz de Quebec. You can get more info at the festival's site, but it seems to be only in French. At any rate, here's the url: http://www.jazzaquebec.ca/programmation.html.
CELEBRATING MARK MURPHY will be held at YOSHI's Jazz Club in Oakland, CA. on Monday Nov. 14. Organized by Kitty Margolis and Laurie Antonelli this is the third annual. @jazzdon--I can answer one of your questions. Mark's latest cd, "Never Let Me Go", recorded in 2010 with Misha Piatigorsky on piano, Danton Boller on bass and Chris Wabich on drums, is available at www.cdbaby.com. Many of Mark's other recordings can be found at www.amazon.com. Hope this helps!
I'm still selling my production of Mark's career achievement award vocal concert, ''Just In Time'' which I produced last Feb/2012. Those with interest to buy either the DVD or CD of the concert can reach me at moonboy22@verizon.net. This is a keepsake in that i was sponsored by the Jazz Foundation Of America
Hello friends. I consider a great historical injustice that recordings made by Mark for MUSE recordings, are now out of print. The owner of these recordings should be aware of its significance. It´s a cultural heritage which cannot remain saved in a drawer. Regards
Great news for Mark´s fans in Berlin, Germany. He will be a the A-Trane Jazz Club on Wednesday, February 1st. Here´s a link to the A-Trane: www.a-trane.de on that site just click program. I´m really happy about this because I missed his concert at the A-Trane a few months ago because I wasn´t in Berlin. I did not expect that he will be here so soon again. I´ll try to make some photos there. Best wishes to all. Chris Muermann
Does anybody remember the "Mark Murphy Appreciation Society"? Bert Warner from the UK was the founder and he did a wonderful regulary magazine called "Mark´s Times". I have many of them and I wonder if Bert Warner is still with us? Best wishes, Chris Muermann
Yes I was a member from about 87, I joined when i was in my early 20's and was a member for a number of years. I ve still got them aswell and often reread them, they were excellent with peoples accounts of MM gigs particularly Bert who gave you details of the trip down ,the hotel etc you really felt you were there. Also Marks letters of course with which gave you an insight into life on the road with sometimes incredible schedules all around Europe I'm a vocalist myself and it always struck me what amazing stamina Mark had in those days with travelling and performance. I often wonder if Bert is still around hopefully he might appear on here one day. I always remember Bert saying a particular issue would be his last because of the time and trouble involved, in hind sight it must have been incredibly difficult producing those mags at home whilst holding down a full time job. Those magazines were great and are very precious to me now and remind you of a time pre internet when it was word of mouth that let you know if Mark was performing somewhere to catch a performance in those days you almost had to be psychic.Anyway nice to hear of a fellow MMAS member...are there any more out there- Jeremy Hillyard
I helped Bert with the newsletter the last year or two he did it. Then when he retired I switched to the website. Cindy Bitterman paid for it and I built it.
I'm the one who came up with those chartreause buttons for us to wear to his gigs so we could recognize each other. Does anyone still have one?
Love and blessings, Kate Murphy (Mark's Sister-in-law)
Hi Kate a very illuminating post!Is Bert still around? there would be some great archive pics and articles in those 'mark times'thanks for all your efforts - Jeremy
I was also a member of the MMAS. I joined whilst at College, was 19 at the time, so about 25 years ago!! I still have the old mags stashed at my mums house and will dig them out next time I am there. Hope to see you all at Ronnie Scotts in London next week.
For those who were asking about Bert Warner in England who ran Mark's Club...I hear from him and he is doing fine. I was the U.S. Rep .for the club. Ron DeArmond now living in Palm Springs CA.

I just came back from the A-Trane Jazzclub here in Berlin, Germany and I watched a marvellous Mark Murphy. At the moment we have very very cold temps in Germany and in many other parts of Europe. But the A-Trane club was warm and sold out. Mark sang about 90min. in one set. He sang a good selection of familiar songs like "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Just In Time", "Again", "I´ve Got You Under My Skin", a Jobim Medley, "Stolen Moments", "When I Fall In Love", etc. The last time I saw Mark live in concert was a few years ago and today I was really looking forward of this concert and I enjoyed it really much. Really, Mark´s voice was good as always in my opinion. On Monday and Tuesday (Jan.30 + 31) he was at the Ronnie Scott´s Club in London. Some comments from these concerts? I made a few photos from the Berlin concert. If somebody is interested, just send me your E-Mail address and I will send the photos. chrismuermann@yahoo.de Best wishes, Chris
Just like to say a really really big thank you to Mark for an amazing night at Ronnie Scotts last Tuesday..I have seen him many times before but for me this was the best ! Mark your music touches us so deeply...you are the best ! :)
Re the inability to see the most recent comments: I went to this blog through Blogger rather than through Mark's site and, at least the last time I tried, was able to see even the most recent posts.
There is quite a bit of Murphy activity on the internet today. Go to the site for WRTI (90.1, Temple University) to hear the Voices in Jazz program. I believe the last hour will be devoted to a recorded interview with Mark. At 11:00 P.M., London time, BBC - Radio 3 - Jazz will broadcast and stream online another interview (and master class). It was conducted by Claire Martin when Mark was at Ronnie Scott's for a recent gig.
For those not yet aware, Mark will celebrate his 80th Birthday at BIRDLAND in NYC on Sunday, March 4th, with George Mesterhazy (piano), Sean Smith (bass) and Willard Dyson (drums). Two shows, 9 and 11 pm. Tickets (212) 581-3080
For those who can't make it in for this Sunday, there will ALSO be a celebration of Mark's life and career at the BLUE NOTE in NYC on MAY 21, this time with special guests (TBA).
Marki-Murf turns 80 today and, judging by his latest CD 'never let me go' (which i purchased @ CDBaby today to celebrate his birthday :-), he's still going strong. parabens meu querido amigo, tudo de bom p/voce. peter

«Oldest ‹Older 401 – 600 of 657 Newer› Newest»I have the double CD Mark Murphy sings Nat King Cole and more.I love all of it,especially the haunting 'roundabout', which he sings with Sheila Jordan, and 'I keep going back to Joes', which he also sings on a CD by Gill Manley.
Delighted to hear that Mark has recovered.
Joyce,
If you haven't already, you should check out "One for Junior," the joint CD recorded by Mark and Sheila. It includes "Roundabout," as well as duets and songs sung individually.
thanks Cha Cha
the cd looks good ,though I suspect hard to find.I love a project,so I'll keep searching
Joyce,
I got my copy of "One for Junior" from one of the vendors of used CDs at Amazon.com.
Happy hunting!
any concerts in europe? sorry i can't find any information on the web.
Digginin,
Was this a joint gig with Nancy King, or did Mark just "sit in" for a song or two?

Where did Mark play last night? Thanks
Just a reminder: if anyone wants to see some great videos of Mark in performance, go to www.youtube.com/friendofjazz.
Kate,
I was able to get Another Vision as a download from iTunes.
"Another Vision" and other hard to find MM recordings can be located at www.gemm.com
Happy hunting!
Okay, Kate. Give us the playing order the Mark gave you of "The Dream."
Correction: playing order of "Another Vision."
I loaned my copy of "DREAM" to a friend and never got it back, but I remember liking "STAIRWAY TO PARADISE" especially.

Hi,
Is there any chance Mark will be ever performing in Poland?
I am a quite recent fan of Mark, got his cd from my jazz history teacher in april or may and I loved it, I'm really inspired by his singing...
Anonymous (from Poland),
What is the name of the CD that your jazz history teacher gave you? Mark has done so many wonderful recordings throughout the years.
No comments yet from other fans, about their favorite unusual songs recorded by Mark, huh? :(
Just want to encourage all of Mark's fans to vote for our man in the DownBeat Readers Poll. I don't believe you have to be a subscriber to do so. Just go to http://downbeat.com and click on the link to the ballot. As a vocal innovator who's still growing as an artist and blowing people away at his performances, he most certainly deserves this.
Hi Mark, it was great catching up with you in New York! Let us knoa when the new CD is out. All the best from Oded in Norway

Anyone have info on some of Mark's upcoming gigs? I heard he has some new recordings coming out but would like to hear him live.
This is for Kate Murphy, in regards to Mark. How is Mark? And when will we have the pleasure of purchasing a new album. Love Mark, seen him many times at the Jazz Bakery in L.A.
Kate Murphy when can we expect something new from Mark, Love Love Love him.
In the UK, Gill Manly has a cd which is certainly worth getting, called 'with a song in my heart'.on it, she sings with Mark, his 'I keep going back to Joes'

Greetings from Espana. I have a radio interview with Mark Murphy from February 1990 that I found in my library on cassette and I will be posting it on my blog just as soon I transfer it to a podcast.

Hey Mark, love the version of Empty faces on the site. Do you know when the full documentary will be released?
If someone here, wants to sell or share that cd (or that track), please contact me at jazz.best@yahoo.com
Hugs to Mark and All.

This article by Jim Brown, written in Spring 2010 I believe, is the most recent update on Mark I've seen. It also has a link to one of his Kitano performances.

Only half kidding here: Mark, being the Irishman he is, may be the first man to sing at his own wake. More power to you Mark!!
Here's the lnk one more time. This time all of it. You'll have to splice them together with no spaces, then copy to your browser.

Recorded track 1983 broadcast by bbc3 on6th nov. " never let me go"
Can you tell me what album?
It's on ' Mark Murphy sings Nat king cole and more' where did you hear that track? is it out there on the internet?
As I am an aging jazz singer has- been, Mark is my fave jazz vocalist of all time. But since I saw him late last year -- Jazz Standard, Blue Note, Vanguard? -- in NYC, I was VERY concerned about his health. He was on a cane and looked very frail, barely able to stand. I know of his habit. Is he OK? I hope so!
Don Quixote
Hey Kurt, concentrate on your own thing 'cause Mark will always run circles around you baby!
forgotten. A tresure. xxxx
Message from "Marjorie" and family - Mark knows who we are - love yah and wish we could be at your nexdt gig, wherever it is. The greatest. Only one MM - no mistakin' who it is when you listen.
I'd love to know about upcoming gigs in the northwest (I'm in Canada, but would journey down to USA) if Mark's up this way! Thanks, Christopher
WHat work did you do with Kurt Elling? Can you provide links and information to get ahold of any?
Hi Mark,
Hey when oh when are you coming back to England ??!! ...or even anywhere in Europe?..we'll travel!!
Thanks!
Vicki ... left a couple of messages, not getting any response to this blog? What's up? Let me know where Mark is performing soon ... will you please?
Love the website - and the song 'Bridges.' Any plans to come to Detroit area? Oakland Community College at Orchard Ridge campus often showcases awesome musicians; we saw Terry Kallier there. Wishing you continuing health, success and peace for 2011 and beyond!
Shiny new article on Mark at the site for Jazz Times Magazine. You can find it here: http://jazztimes.com/articles/27063-mark-murphy-ready-to-sing.
Excellent article. Great news that Mark has done another album and hope the dvd gets sorted. Thanks cha cha. - jeremy
Hello all,
Just read that article and it has cheered up this dreary February afternoon no end!
N.
Actually I can tell you Mark never left. He's like the Eveready Energizer Bunny--just keeps going and going!
interesting article. It certainly cheered me up.So glad to read that Marks health is improving.Maybe we shall see him in London soon.I hope so.
First, an LA Times article on Mark looks great and can be found here (copy and paste):
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-onthemedia-20110202,0,6994099.column
The second item is a heads-up to keep an eye out for a new MM album. The only question is if a label will pick it up. Go to this link (you might have to copy and paste):
http://www.allmusic.com/album/never-let-me-go-r2124022
It's unusual to see so much advance work done... cover photo and graphics, title, AND sample clips... without an official release out there.
Glad to hear you're feeling better Mark. And I've gotta say your voice is too legit to quit!
Mark.. I dream of the day you will come out to Los Angeles... You are one of the true greats.. Exxe@aol.com
Does anyone know if Mark Murphy will be in the WNY/Toronto area anytime soon. I haven't heard a word about any gigs. He's my all-time fav, just love his instrument! There'll never be another Mark!!!
xoxoxo
Steve,
I copied that link to the LA Times, but when I got to the site, I couldn't seem to find the article you mentioned. (Could this be due to the fact that I did this two days after your post?)

Absolutely wonderful interview with Mark, to promote his upcoming gigs in Florida on February 13 and 14. The url to the site where it's been archived is: http://wgcu.org/audioplayer/8894.aspx.
Just read the Jazz Times article. Thanks so much for that reference. Just terrific news about Maestro!

Welcome aboard, Jean-Pierre. Please tell Mark cousin Neil will see him at the Zinc Bar.
Yes,big hearty welcomes, indeed Jean-Pierre! I'm sure he has told you he will be singing at my daughter's wedding in Santa Barbara, CA the last weekend in June. LIFE IS GOOD!
Hi Kate,
Mark mentioned he was attending his niece's wedding, but I didn't realize it was your daughter he was talking about. Warm and sincere congratulations!
Cha Cha
P.S. He asked me to find him the words and music for him!

Hi there,
I thought I'd let you know - I'm clearing out some albums and selling Mark's 'This Must Be Earth' album.

But I think it´s very interesting to see
how Mark rehearsed with the band. I hope you´ll like it.
So, here are the links.

I also like those photos on the new cd. The photographer for the "Never Let Me Go" project did a wonderful job.
Any current gigs?? (2011 may 19) Thanks!!!!

Hello, my name is Corina. I´m a Jazz singer, live in New York and was wondering if anybody knows if Mr Murphy gives any workshops, seminars or private lessons in town ??? I would be very interested in joining them if possible.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help and attention,
Kind regards,
Corina.
Corina, jazz singer in New York, just found Mark on facebook. His email is markmurphyliveson@gmail.com. Maybe you can contact him directly?

Andy - Would you please list the YouTube URL of Mark's latest gig so us lurkers may enjoy the experience

To declare the obvious with an air of discovery: Of Mark's many masterpieces, "Blood Count" remains, to these ears, as close to the Platonic ideal of vocal jazz interpretation as any ever offered.
And now a question: Does a MM at Kent State LP and/or CD exist?
With the deepest respect for and gratitude to Mark,
Charlie Drago
Charlie Drago ....... don't know if LP/CD exists but here are 2 YouTube links bearing performances from Kent State:

Hope this helps!
Thanks, oh Anonymous one.
I've previously visited the YouTube pages you indicated. On them is a photo of what appears to be a 70's vintage LP jacket.
Of course the whole Kent State thing could be a put-on worthy of Lenny ... or perhaps something else entirely ...
Hmmm ...
Mark's tri-state area fans will be happy to learn that he has another gig coming up very soon, at the legendary jazz club, Birdland.
Here's the pertinent info:

This is an article I wrote for the Huffington post regarding Mark's last gig at Birdland. Hope you all enjoy..

You and Sarah V
aughn, past,present, and future.
Speaking of Sarah Vaughn, love the song you wrote as a tribute to her
on the Dream album.
[I think he was Oriental]
We will follow him,as we've followed you.
I pledge fealty, Mark!
@Mikhail--Thanks for your note. If I do any gigs in New York, the news will be posted right here on this blog.
Can anyone let me know how they liked hearing Mark sing in Germany again? Any details about the gig would be great.
Recently got the CD, "Never Let Me Go" and am loving it...am AMAZED at the beauty of Mark's tone after all these years. He is the BEST.
CELEBRATING MARK MURPHY will be held at YOSHI's Jazz Club in Oakland, CA. on Monday Nov. 14.
Organized by Kitty Margolis and Laurie Antonelli this is the third annual. They will be performing along with Madeline Eastman, Ann Dyer and THE MAN HIMSELF!!
Check Kitty Margolis on Facebook for more info. or Yoshi's webpage.
Mark please come back to LA we so miss you. Mark what is the oriental
guy"s name that was at the jazz
bakery'the very last time you were
there. you said that he sings better than you, which I can't believe that could ever be true.
Mark what is his name so I can
follow him.
love You

Does anyone know where Mark placed in the DownBeat Readers poll?

Mark will celebrate 2012, his 80th Birthday year, with concerts virtually all over the globe. Stay tuned in this space for news as I confirm new dates.
In the meantime, for those of you in the NYC area, there will be a concert on Wed Dec 14 at The New School in Manhattan, open to the public, with Mark and Annie Ross guesting. Please note this is not a MM gig as such, but a concert of note that will doubtless be a treat.
Dec 14, 2011, at 8:00 pm. Jazz and Contemporary Music Performance Space, Arnold Hall, 55 West 13th Street, 5th floor.
Details are here:

Just booked my tickets for Mark at Ronnie Scotts in the uk in January.
Great news Mark is over here, anyone else going?
I would pay some to see/hear a performance in the mid-west, if there's a gig within reach of eastern Iowa.
Great great fan. Im a vocalist myself, so, I know where Mark is. I live in Pittsburgh Pa and want very much to pick up on Mark...if I can get a line on his gigs.
where does Mark reside? Where's the best place to purchase his cds. Will he be anywhere in Pennsylvania and when.

Thanks for your support. I have to give you my dearest Christmas greetings and a Happy New Year. For this lovely, lovely year, bless you all.

Hi Mark..so so glad you are coming back to London in January..can't wait! Have a great Christmas and see you at Ronnies's on Jan 31st.
Here´s a link to the A-Trane:
www.a-trane.de
on that site just click program.
I´m really happy about this because I missed his concert at the A-Trane a few months ago because I wasn´t in Berlin. I did not expect that he will be here so soon again.
I´ll try to make some photos there.
Best wishes to all.

Does anybody remember the "Mark Murphy Appreciation Society"? Bert Warner from the UK was the founder and he did a wonderful regulary magazine called "Mark´s Times". I have many of them and I wonder if Bert Warner is still with us?
Best wishes,
Chris Muermann
Hi Kate...I think I still have my pin...is it really chartreuse???
Cuz Neil

If somebody is interested, just send me your E-Mail address and I will send the photos. chrismuermann@yahoo.de
Best wishes,
Chris
Just like to say a really really big thank you to Mark for an amazing night at Ronnie Scotts last Tuesday..I have seen him many times before but for me this was the best ! Mark your music touches us so deeply...you are the best ! :)
Martyn,
Ronnie's was always good to me,. But I think this time I felt what you felt, and we all had such a great time. Thanks so much for your note.
Mark
can't seem to get into the more recent comments. Wondering how the tour is going and whether any news whether he'll be coming to Sydney.
Shane
One important omission from my last post. Visions in Jazz on WRTI will begin at 3:00 p.m. EST.
How come I can only view the first 200 comments. What happened ?
Haven't had the problem in the past.
Is Mark still touring?

Marki-Murf turns 80 today and, judging by his latest CD 'never let me go' (which i purchased @ CDBaby today to celebrate his birthday :-), he's still going strong.
parabens meu querido amigo, tudo de bom p/voce.
